A liquid medium containing 1% casamino acid, 1% glucose, 0.1% NaCl, 0.1% KCl, 0.01% MgGl2, 0.02% CaCl2 and 0.03% K2HPO4 was used to form germ tubes in C. albicans. The relation of C. albicans to several other Candida species (C. glabrata, C. tropicalis and C. krusei) was examined with the new in vitro system of germ tube formation in C. albicans. This system was useful in showing the role of the Candida species in transition to the mycelial form in C. albicans.

Key words: Candida albicans; germ tube; oral candidiasis
